Summary:
In August 2002, I went to San Francisco for a month's working holiday. These pages record some of impressions the trip made on me.
Big Sur, from the Post Ranch Inn
Aileen came out for the last week of my trip. She had been in England directing a show. The day after she arrived we drove South for four hours to Big Sur.
Some of the tree house rooms at the hotel
We stayed at the Post Ranch Inn, which is the most beautiful hotel I have ever visited. All the rooms are built out of wood and iron like old-West shacks, but beautifully appointed. Some of them looked out over the ocean while others looked East to the mountains. Some were like tree houses and some were like turrets. Our room had a vast stone Jacuzzi and a big wooden deck with two large chairs.
It was hard to fault. I liked the fact that everything in the mini bar was free so you could snack and drink all you liked. The buffet breakfasts were awesome and the restaurant was perched on stilts on a cliff over the ocean so that it was like being in an ocean liner. In fact, my only real complaint was that the only dinner option was a very expensive, very lengthy prix fixe menu in the restaurant. Even if you didn't mind the expense (and I would guess that most guests probably can, although we baulked at it) a two-hour meal EVERY night might get a bit tiring.
The view from our room
We stayed there for three nights. Aileen went to Yoga every morning and we walked, swam, ate, looked through a telescope at the stars, saw a shooting star, had long, long baths and generally unwound. It was a lovely holiday.
